Chiropractic & Acupuncture for Headaches and Migraines: Could It Help You?

Acupuncture for head aches

Headaches and migraines affect millions of people. Many patients who suffer from migraines and other types of headaches often reach for medication so they can get through their day. However, since medications can pose the risk of side effects, alternative treatment options like chiropractic care and acupuncture can be preferable. At O’Keefe Chiropractic Center, our doctor often works with patients who suffer from migraines and other headaches, helping them achieve medication-free relief.

How Can Help With Migraines and Other Headaches?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine. Its intent is to remove energy blockages and restore the proper flow of energy. From a modern point of view, it’s thought that acupuncture works by stimulating the release of hormones, including endorphins, in order to prompt a healing response from the immune and circulatory systems. One study found that acupuncture was “at least as effective” as a daily medication for treating migraine pain.

One of the tea members at O’Keefe Chiropractic Center, Dr. Moises Moris Jr., is a licensed, board-certified acupuncturist. He specializes in pain management. Even if you’re a little wary of needles, Dr. Moris Jr. will work with you to help you receive the care you need. You’ll likely be relieved to know that acupuncture needles are so small that many people barely feel them.

How Can Chiropractic Care Relieve Headache Pain?

There are multiple types of headaches. The headaches that often respond well to chiropractic care include cervicogenic headaches, which tend to begin at the back of the head and move to the front. These headaches may also be accompanied by shoulder or arm pain. Tension headaches (which feel like a tight band of pressure around the head) and migraines may also respond well to chiropractic care.

After assessing your headache symptoms, our chiropractor may recommend spinal manipulation. Spinal adjustments may relieve headache and migraine symptoms by improving the ability of the nervous system to function properly. Soft tissue therapies, such as the Active Release Technique®, may also be helpful for some headache patients.
